Black holes have powerful gravity, but they do not roam through space vacuuming up everything. An object must pass very close to a black hole to be captured. The boundary beyond which nothing can escape is called the event horizon. From far away, a black hole's gravity acts like the gravity of any other object with the same mass. Earth orbits the Sun because the Sun is nearby and massive. The nearest known black holes are enormously far from our solar system, so none is pulling Earth toward danger. Even if the Sun were magically replaced by a black hole with the same mass, Earth would keep orbiting at the same distance, although our planet would become dark and cold without sunlight.
