Can a Chameleon Turn Any Color?

Can a chameleon copy any color it sees? Not quite. Chameleons change within a range of colors created by specialized layers in their skin. Tiny structures called nanocrystals reflect different wavelengths of light. When the spacing between those crystals changes, the reflected color changes too. A chameleon may shift color when it is excited, frightened, communicating, or adjusting its body temperature. Camouflage can help, but it is not the only reason for the display. Different species have different palettes, so a chameleon cannot simply match every background like a magic paintbrush.
