Why Do Fireflies Light Up at Night?!

On warm summer nights, tiny lights blink above the grass. They belong to fireflies, which are actually beetles. A firefly's lantern is inside its abdomen. There, a substance called luciferin reacts with oxygen with help from an enzyme called luciferase. The reaction releases energy as light with almost no heat. Scientists call this bioluminescence. Fireflies flash in patterns to communicate, often to find a mate. Different species use different rhythms, like secret light-up languages. Some young fireflies even glow to warn predators that they taste unpleasant.
